Library Tutoring
BoulderReads! provides library-based one-on-one tutoring for adults at four sites:
- Boulder Public Library's
- Main Branch
- George Reynolds Branch Library
- Meadows Branch Library
- Lafayette Public Library
Adult poor readers often prefer a one-on-one library program to a classroom-based program because they:
- Have painful memories of classroom experiences that they don't want to repeat
- Fear embarrassing themselves in front of other people
- Perceive libraries as neutral and non-authoritarian
- Have more control over what they are learning and how
- Can pursue their own specific goals (see below) without having to study other less personally relevant material
Common goals for adults enrolling in BoulderReads! include:
- Passing the driver's license test
- Reading to their children
- Improving their employability
- Passing the citizenship test
- Assisting their children with homework
- Being able to enjoy reading or at least not be afraid of it
- Being comfortable completing American paperwork
- Mastering life-skills such as writing checks
- using the yellow pages, and reading menus
