Library Tutoring

BoulderReads! provides library-based one-on-one tutoring for adults at four sites:

  • Boulder Public Library's
  • Main Branch
  • George Reynolds Branch Library
  • Meadows Branch Library
  • Lafayette Public Library

Adult poor readers often prefer a one-on-one library program to a classroom-based program because they:

  • Have painful memories of classroom experiences that they don't want to repeat
  • Fear embarrassing themselves in front of other people
  • Perceive libraries as neutral and non-authoritarian
  • Have more control over what they are learning and how
  • Can pursue their own specific goals (see below) without having to study other less personally relevant material

Common goals for adults enrolling in BoulderReads! include:

  • Passing the driver's license test
  • Reading to their children
  • Improving their employability
  • Passing the citizenship test
  • Assisting their children with homework
  • Being able to enjoy reading or at least not be afraid of it
  • Being comfortable completing American paperwork
  • Mastering life-skills such as writing checks
  • using the yellow pages, and reading menus
